Candidate statement
I am from the Caribbean. I was born in Barbados, studied medicine in both Barbados and Jamaica at the University of the West Indies, worked in Jamaica and Australia as a Forensic Pathologist, and then immigrated to Canada. I am currently based in Toronto, Ontario. My professional and personal journeys have shown me how much being seen and truly heard means. How much representation and support matter. Academically and professionally, I found myself charting the pathway for my colleagues to becoming Caribbean trained Forensic Pathologists(FP) and as an IMG specialist, I am the first to acquire CPSO FP licensure via the SEAP pathway. Having worked in different countries, my experience would be a great addition to the already varied cadre of professionals who are serving the members of the CMPA. Although forensic pathology is not a clinical field, it provides a clear insight of the practice of medicine; it allows for the objective assessment of quality and standards of practice, and the information obtained, can have a wider public impact. Forensic pathology teaches one how to assimilate information, and to be patient before interpreting facts, in order to give balanced expert opinions. The practice of forensic pathology includes the use of discretion, confidentiality, conscientiousness, ethics and honesty. There are significant legal ramifications based on our opinions, thus our work is always under scrutiny by our peers, and by our stakeholders including Police, Coroners, the Courts and the General Public. These traits and core values align with the core values of the CMPA.
Forensic Pathologists are advisors. My consultation services have been sought by entities such as Ministry of Health of Jamaica and the Medical Protection Society (Caribbean and Bermuda Team) to review potential medico-legal cases. Being a CMPA council member would provide a wonderful opportunity for me to serve my fellow physicians and medical colleagues. I believe in service, serving and volunteering, which goes back to my tertiary educational days when I was involved in not-for-profit Circle K Service Clubs for 7 years (Club director and District Secretary for the Eastern Caribbean and Canadian District) and for these reasons, I am applying for nomination.
