Candidate statement
I am writing to express my interest in becoming a CMPA council member. As a family physician with a law degree, I often found myself being asked by my colleagues to help assess medico-legal risks or review applicable legislation or regulations. I also participated as a medical expert in several CMPA cases which have re-invigorated my passion for law. Now, I am excited to share my experiences more broadly and I believe that my practice in comprehensive family medicine, work in medical education, experiences in leadership roles, as well as my background in law make me an ideal candidate.
I have been a practicing family physician for 15 years. In addition to my academic ambulatory practice at St Joseph’s Health Care London, I am a part-time palliative care consultant at London Health Sciences Centre, University Campus and a hospitalist in Exeter, Ontario, a rural community outside of London. Working in these different environments, from a tertiary care centre to a community hospital without a CT scanner on site, I am keenly aware of the daily challenges physicians face such as health care resource scarcity, increasing complexities in patients and burnout. I welcome the opportunity to share my experience and lend support to physicians in need.
I am an Associate Professor with the Department of Family Medicine at Western University and have held many local and provincial leadership positions including our Annual Clinical Day Conference Chair, Family Health Organization Lead, Lead Hospitalist (Huron Health System 2014-2017), Complex Systems Navigator (CFPC) and Western University Urban Family Residency Program Director (2011-2018). I have expertise in training both Canadian and International medical graduates. As demonstrated by these commitments, I am passionate about education which will translate well in fulfilling the CMPA's goal of educating doctors to deliver safe and quality medical care.
I served on the Board of Directors at the Ontario College of Family Physicians (2016-2021) and was its Secretary Treasurer for two years. Through this experience, I developed a strong understanding of organizational structures, governance and financial literacy. I understand that CMPA is undergoing a governance review and the current strategic plan is in place until 2025. I believe that my skill set will help modernize CMPA's regulatory structure and I look forward to participating in the next strategic plan development.
