Electronic medical records (EMRs) and electronic health records (EHRs), also referred to as eRecords, encompass a wide range of electronic record management systems available to physicians and other custodians of patient health information. eRecords are an integral part of healthcare delivery in Canada.

To ensure they meet their professional obligations and mitigate potential medico-legal risks related to the use of eRecord systems, physicians should be aware of the legislation, regulatory requirements, and technological standards that apply to eRecords.
