CMPA Welcomes newly elected President, Dr. Birinder Singh

OTTAWA, August 15, 2024—The Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) is pleased to announce that Dr. Birinder Singh has commenced his term as President of the Association. Dr. Singh was welcomed to his new role at the Association’s Annual Meeting, held in Halifax, Nova Scotia yesterday.

Dr. Singh is the medical director of Eglinton Station Medical Centre in midtown Toronto, where he practices Family Medicine. He is also a lawyer, having completed a combined MD/LLB degree at Western University. Dr. Singh completed a judicial clerkship under The Honourable Mr. Justice Ian Binnie of the Supreme Court of Canada, followed by Family Medicine residency at the Toronto Western Hospital.

Dr. Singh was a medical inspector at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), a legal consultant for interveners at the Supreme Court of Canada, and an adjunct professor in the Family Medicine program at the University of Toronto. He is a member of the Law Society of Ontario and is a Fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Dr. Singh was also previously a board member of Médecins Sans Frontières Canada.

Elected to Council in 2014, Dr. Singh served as the CMPA’s first vice-president from 2022-2024. His varied background has helped him develop a deep understanding of the medico-legal issues facing physicians.

“As a 10-year veteran of CMPA Council, Dr. Singh understands the intricacies of the Association and knows how important it is to represent the member voice on Council,” said outgoing President, Dr. Jean-Hugues Brossard. “I have every confidence that his strong leadership, governance knowledge, and healthcare system experience will position the CMPA for success for years to come.’

During the CMPA’s Annual Meeting, Dr. Lisa Calder, CEO, expressed her gratitude on behalf of the Association to Dr. Brossard for his dedication to the role of President over the past two years, and welcomed Dr. Singh as the CMPA’s incoming President. “Dr. Brossard’s wisdom, guidance and expert leadership over the past two years have helped us develop a targeted and practical Strategic Plan,” said Dr. Calder. “I am also pleased to wish a warm welcome Dr. Singh in his role as CMPA President. I look forward to collaborating with him to modernize our governance and to progress on key issues of importance to our members.”

“It is truly an honour to lead such an exceptional organization, and I look forward to working with my dynamic Council colleagues and the talented CMPA staff to continue to protect the professional integrity of our over 111,000 members and help them provide safe medical care,” said Dr. Singh. “I am also committed to continuing to modernize the governance of the CMPA, supporting the execution of its 2023-2025 Strategic Plan, and advancing the Association’s EDI Strategy."

Dr. Singh will serve a two-year term as CMPA President, ending at the CMPA Annual Meeting in 2026.
