Managing Unprofessional Behaviour 1: Core Skills for Healthcare Leaders

The increased pressures of clinical practice today have significantly impacted physicians and other healthcare professionals. To help you enhance your skills in managing behavioural challenges within your healthcare teams, CMPA offers a series of accredited, virtual learning opportunities.
This comprehensive program begins with an eLearning activity; "Unprofessional Behaviour: A Symptom, Not a Diagnosis." After completing this activity, CMPA offers two virtually facilitated workshops on managing unprofessional behaviour.
This first workshop, designed for leaders and aspiring leaders, will cover core skills for managing unprofessional behaviour. Upon completion, interested members can deepen their knowledge and skills with "Managing Unprofessional Behaviour 2: Advanced Skills for Healthcare Leaders."
Prerequisites
Key elements of the program
- Understand how unprofessional behaviour impacts patient safety.
- Consider underlying and contributing factors for physicians exhibiting unprofessional behaviour.
- Review and apply the concepts of procedural fairness when managing unprofessional behaviour.
- Learn and apply a framework for managing unprofessional behaviour.
Topics covered
- Review possible contributing factors to unprofessional behaviour in sample scenarios.
- Learn a step-wise approach to managing episodes of unprofessional behaviour.
- Apply this approach to sample scenarios involving physicians.
- Review key tools and communication strategies when addressing unprofessional behaviour.
Learning objectives
- Describe a step-wise approach to managing unprofessional behaviour.
- Apply the management framework to case examples and identify barriers, strategies and resources.
- Demonstrate effective communication during feedback conversations in these case examples.
Duration
A 3.5-hour synchronous online session.
Credits
This activity meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Quebec College of Family Physicians, a continuing professional development accrediting organization recognized by the Collège des Médecins du Québec and has been approved for up to 3.5 Mainpro+ Certified Assessment Activity credits.
This activity is an Accredited Self-Assessment Program (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and approved by CMPA. You may claim a maximum of 3.5 hours (credits are automatically calculated).
